About the different types of testing
For the most accurate results, arrive rested, hydrated, and ready to exercise.Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before your test.Avoid a large meal for 2–3 hours beforehand. A light meal or snack earlier in the day is fine.Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before testing.Limit caffeine for at least 3 hours before your appointment.Stay well hydrated, but there’s no need to drink excessive amounts of water immediately before testing.Take your usual medications unless your physician has instructed you otherwise. Please let us know what medications you take, particularly medications that affect heart rate.Wear comfortable exercise clothing. If you plan to be tested on the treadmill, wear running shoes. If you are a cyclist, you can bring clip-ins or use the pedal baskets with sneakers.Don’t test when you’re sick. If you have a fever, significant respiratory illness, chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, or otherwise aren’t feeling well, contact us to reschedule. Most importantly, come ready to give your best effort. A VO₂max test becomes progressively harder and typically ends when you reach your maximum sustainable effort—but the hard part doesn’t last very long.
Plan on approximately one hour for your first visit. This gives us time to review your health and fitness history, discuss your goals, explain the testing process, perform your VO₂max test, and review your results with you.The actual exercise test is much shorter—typically about 10–15 minutes of progressively increasing effort.Follow-up VO₂max testing usually takes about 30 minutes, since we already know your history and can focus on measuring your progress.
It depends on you! VO2theMaxx offers VO₂max testing on either a treadmill or stationary bike.If you’re primarily a runner, walker, or participate in sports that involve running, the treadmill will usually provide the most relevant assessment. If you’re a cyclist—or simply more comfortable exercising on a bike—the bike may be the better choice. Not sure which to choose? We’ll help you select the testing method that best matches your fitness, experience, and goals.
